Our Lactation Consultants consultations are available in our clinic, at your home or even via video.
Individual Consultations
Individual consultations in the postnatal period by a Lactation Consultant can be at your home, at our Kensington clinic, or via Zoom.
We will take a history, observe your unique situation and work together to create a personalized plan. Our LC’s are skilled in using the Ultrasound Machine to help treating mastitis. If you think you might need this service, book in for the Ultrasound appointment (no additional charge).
We also offer flange fittings during our standard consultation. If you are interested, please let us know so we have our equipment ready. If you book a home visit, this is possible too. Please let us know which breast pump you are using in the assessment form we ask you to fill out.
Why would I need an individual postnatal consultation?
When breastfeeding is established it’s usually easy, convenient and such a pleasure. However, it is not uncommon to encounter challenges. MAMA’s Lactation Consultants can help with the following:
Attachment difficulties
Nipple/breast pain
Low supply
Oversupply / forceful letdown

What does a postnatal consult include?
Sometimes reassurance, encouragement, personal advice and A PLAN can make such a difference.
A postnatal consult includes:
Taking a history.
Inspecting your breasts and nipples.
Examining the baby’s mouth and observing a breastfeed.
Weighing baby (if desired).
We will develop an individualised breastfeeding plan and can refer you to other health professionals if indicated. We offer to follow up via phone or email after each consultation.
We have three types of appointments to suit all needs
Our Clinic
Initial - $200 for 90 minutes
Return - $150 for 60 minutes

Your Home
$300 for 90 minutes (plus $0.92 per km travelled between your home and MAMA Kensington)
* This fee is valid only for clients within 15kms of MAMA Kensington. If you live more than 15 km from the clinic, we may arrange a higher fee or recommend another LC. Please call us or fill in an online form for more information about this.

Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic Ultrasound is used to help treat blocked ducts and mastitis. It is designed to help open the ducts and increase circulation to improve the flow of milk, reduce pain and reduce swelling.
Therapeutic Ultrasound is used to help treat blocked ducts and mastitis. It is designed to help open the ducts and increase circulation to improve the flow of milk, reduce pain and reduce swelling.
Therapeutic ultrasound treatment is not used to diagnose (there is no screen connected to the machine), it is similar to a gentle massage using heat with the ultrasound probe. It can feel tingly and warm which also helps to relieve the pain. It feels different for everyone but it should NOT be painful.
It works by using the sound waves of the machine on your breast then your breast detects this as a foreign body (without doing any harm). Your body will send healing mediators to this specific place which improves the healing process. Also, the sound waves gently shake the blockage which helps to unblock the duct while the warmth makes it more comfortable. When you are more comfortable it’s easier to feed your baby and milk flows better.
In combination with the Ultrasound Treatment, we offer a full assessment and make a plan with you. Firstly focusing on feeding/pumping/supply/breast and nipple care etc.

Pumping Consultation
This appointment is a must for mums who are exclusively pumping but also very important for the occasional pumpers.
Why choose a pumping consultation?
The majority of women are not a size 24, the standard flange size that comes with a pump. A properly sized flange can be a game changer to your breastfeeding/pumping journey. It will decrease the amount of pain you experience while pumping and can increase the amount of milk you pump.
During this consultation, we will fit you for a properly sized flange and try on/use multiple different flange brands like Pumpin Pals flanges, Lacteck flanges, BeauGen inserts, Milkeaze hand-free cups, Sleepy mommy adaptor, Maymom flange inserts. This is your chance to touch, feel and pump with the different products so we can find one that works for YOU!

During this appointment, our Lactation Consultant will:
Fit you for a proper flange size
Teach you how to:
Use your pump and find out what settings work best for you.
Change the settings throughout a pumping session.
Maximise the amount of milk you get out per pumping session and throughout your pumping journey.
Duration: 30 minutes
Cost: $100 ($15 discount if you have attended the LC Clinic for another paid service
