Presented by experienced MAMA midwives, this comprehensive workshop for parents-to-be will draw from the best-available evidence to cover:

  • anatomy & physiology of breastfeeding
  • Why we promote & support breastfeeding (benefits for mums & babies)
  • Antenatal expressing
  • The impact of labour/birth interventions
  • Skin-to-skin time & baby’s first breastfeed
  • Colostrum + the early days of breastfeeding
  • “Milk coming in” + ongoing breastfeeding
  • Attachment (“latch”) & positioning + “Baby-led” attachment
  • How to tell if baby is getting enough milk
  • How to get the right advice & support
  • Dad’s role
  • Common problems & how to tackle them (e.g. low supply, oversupply, cracked/damaged/painful nipples, tongue tie, engorgement, mastitis, nipple thrush
  • Bottles, dummies & nipple confusion
  • The “fourth trimester” & normal newborn behaviours
  • Going back to work & breastfeeding (including expressing/pumping & breastfeeding older babies)
  • Alternative ways to feed baby (syringe & cup feeding, donor milk & medical reasons for formula)
