The perinatal period is the time from your baby’s conception through their first year of life. It is a period of anticipation, and while this can be joyful it is also a time your mental health can be more vulnerable.
It is normal to feel tearful and anxious during the perinatal period, but if you or your partner are experiencing symptoms of mental ill-health for more than two weeks, it is important to seek help.
In Australia, 1 in 10 women and 1 in 20 men experience antenatal anxiety and/or antenatal depression. Also 1 in 6 women, and 1 in 10 men experience postnatal anxiety and/or postnatal depression.
Perinatal therapy can help overcome the challenges of pregnancy and post-partum, and help establish a strong foundation for you and your baby.
We provide individualised and evidence-based psychological therapeutic support, with mothering and the parent-infant relationship at the heart of her practice. We see women (and partners) and their babies who are experiencing a range of mental health or relational difficulties, including:
– Increased and sustained worry or low mood during pregnancy, struggles to connect with an unborn baby and an inability to mentally see oneself as a mother.
– Birth trauma and unresolved issues stemming from experiences in the medical system, leading to a struggle to connect with one’s newborn.
– Feelings of failure and hopelessness in the postpartum period, often triggered by challenges related to infant care.
Our clinician is highly specialised and experienced in perinatal and infant mental health. We are passionate and committed to supporting women, partners and their babies to achieve mental wellbeing and recovery.
