with Nisha Gill – birth educator, doula, Tigress Yoga instructor

Our birthing culture in 2014 is significantly geared towards medical intervention of one kind or another. The incidence of Caesarian section in Australia is well above rates recommended by the World Health Organisation and highest of all in the private health sector. All of this is largely driven by fear, a lack of trust in women’s bodies and the need for institutions to meet timelines and bottom lines.
Navigating birthing options as first-time parents can be confusing at best. It is no wonder that most women opt for the path of least resistance in hospital systems and succumb to becoming “patients”. In doing so they unwittingly relinquish trust in their bodies and so begins their journey of being disempowered as birthing woman and mother. This can have far-reaching effects on her whole family well after her baby’s birth.
So what is your idea of normal physiological birth, whether in hospital or at home?
How important is it to you to birth your baby as naturally as possible?
Is a “healthy baby” simply all that matters?
What is your potential for being empowered in birth, regardless of intervention?
And how can you maximize this potential?
