Hayley was born in Darwin and raised in Brisbane, where she completed her Bachelors of Nursing & Midwifery at the University of Queensland. Inspired by the woman-centred philosophies of her university lecturers (including the wonderful Maet from MAMA Brisbane!), she relocated to Victoria, drawn to learn from the trail-blazing MAMA midwives. She is currently consolidating her skills at a public hospital in regional Victoria. Hayley believes in the importance of the midwife’s role in keeping “normal” normal, and is driven to provide evidence-based midwifery care that empowers women and families. She’s particularly passionate about promoting informed decision-making and partnership between mums (and dads!) and maternity care providers. Alongside fellow midwife Jess, Hayley has written and presents the revamped MAMABirth childbirth education course. Outside of midwifery, Hayley is a fanatical netballer, and can be found cheering on her beloved Melbourne Vixens at every home game. She lives in Bacchus Marsh with her partner, and spends the long drives to and from Melbourne daydreaming about her next European holiday.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Kelly was set on the path to midwifery by an experience in adolescence. As part of her Nursing and Midwifery degree at La Trobe University, Kelly travelled to Jönköping, Sweden, to immerse herself in the country’s holistic care for mothers and babies. Upon graduation, Kelly spent two years as a midwife at The Women’s Hospital, Melbourne, honing her skills, before seeking a to provide continuity of care. A workshop with an experienced homebirth midwife led her to move into private practice, and Kelly realised this was where she wanted to be. Jan and Kelly discussed opening a private midwifery centre, and when the Maternity Reforms changed in 2010 to allow midwives access to medicare and PBS, they took their chance. Now Kelly brings her energy, knowledge and gentle manner to the MAMA centre. Kelly is currently studying for a Masters of Midwifery, is a registered Calmbirth practitioner, a regular half-marathon runner and only recently married in December 2011! She can’t wait to contribute to a family of her own, as well as seeing more midwives and mothers working together in the community.

Travelling around Europe in a Combi van with her husband in the early 70’s, Jan was one of the original flower children when she fell pregnant with her own first child, Emma. Such news put an end to Jan’s hippy lifestyle – they sold the Combi van and came home to Australia to raise a family. The disempowering childbirth that delivered Emma spurred Jan on to midwifery training, which she completed at the Queen Victoria Hospital in 1975, going on to work at Monash Medical Centre for many years. Jan has been in private practice as a midwife for 25 years now; she remains committed to avoiding disempowerment of the family during pregnancy, birth and beyond. She particularly enjoys working with younger midwives, and is passionate about helping midwives to take full advantage of the recent maternity reforms in Victoria.
